Moving towards sustainable energy in Worcestershire
"Powering the Future: Towards sustainable energy", an event which took place at Worcester Guildhall on Saturday, attracted more than 50 people to conference sessions and scores of people to an accompanying exhibition.
Liz Alston, Sustainability Manager at Worcestershire County Council, was one of four speakers during the morning session. She told conference participants what the County Council is doing to tackle climate change by reducing carbon-dioxide emissions. The afternoon session was opened by the Mayor of Worcester, Cllr. Dr. David Tibbutt, who stayed to hear Rachel Jones, Partnership Manager at Act on Energy, speak about saving energy in our homes. There were lively discussions at six workshops during the afternoon. Input came from Vic Allison, Deputy Managing Director of Wychavon District Council, John Raine, Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies, John Thorp, Managing Director of the Thameswey Group, Barbara Cooper, Director of Community Energy Warwickshire, and Jamie Baldwin and Gareth Williams of Caplor Energy.
The event was organised by Transition groups in Evesham Vale, Pershore, Worcester and Malvern Hills. Gordon Matthews, convenor of the energy group of Transition Evesham Vale, explained that Transition is about building local resilience in response to climate change and diminishing oil and gas supplies.
Maureen Martin, a participant at the event, said: "The keynote speakers were excellent and varied and the workshops were stimulating with lots of food for thought."
